I was at the London Motorshow last Friday and saw the specs on the new 335d. 286hp and 0-60 in 6.1s. So slightly up on the 535d with 272hp.
The 335 petrol will be available in coupe and 4 door in Sept in the UK, both with 306hp! 0-60 in 5.5s.

the max torque of the new x35d engine arrives at only 1600rpm, and not at 2000rpm like the old engine. In addition the torque curve is flatter (doent tail off), and at 4000rpm the new engine produces 50nm more than the old one !

Hello all,
I thought I was going mad! - I too saw a configurator, but it was for the used cars. Lo and behold the 335d was listed. But if I look now it's gone. I think someone jumped the gun.
I'm looking to change my car now and go back to the stiffer ride of the 3's that I have previously owned (E46 330 and 323) and have ordered a '56' plate E91 330d Sport with all the toys - but various sources, 'Car magazine and BMW' say there's going to be an announcement with regards to the 335 at the end of August.
I may hold fire.

The X3 also now has the 286BHP x35d engine; my understanding is that there is no physical change to the engine at all, its a straight software change - the engine was originally 'limited' to 272bhp to keep clear water between this and the top end petrol E60s, but with the arrival of the 550 that is less important. Same (BMW not dealer ) source tells me that the 286bhp package will appear on the E60 without any announcement, it will just happen.
BMW have plenty of leeway left to increase the power of this engine to well beyond 300 bhp, but marketing considerations will dictate what is actually offered.

I believe the new 335D engine is an all new engine, based on the latest 530D, 330D engine. Its made out of aluminium and features more efficent Piezo injectors. Benefits are less weight (particuarly good thing for the nose heavy handling of most diesel cars). A slight increase in peak power and torque, but this isn't the most important thing as 700700 mentions. The engine now has more power and torqe from lower down in the rev range, and tails off alot less than the previous engine higher up. In theory this means it will behave much more like a petrol engine, but with the benefits of diesel torque!
