I'll do some more research on this kind of stuff but you're right, if I can configure a machine just for this purpose and disconnect it once I'm done, I should be fairly safe (don't know about any port forwarding issues with the firewall/router but obviously I could shut them down too.)

For me, connection speed isn't much of an issue with FiOS...
