The new shifter is clumsy. You have to shift into R then N and then D. That's 3 clicks. With the existing shifter, one swoop and your in D.

The current 7er has the shifter on the column, and is also mechanically backward but technologically advance. :'(

I don't think this is the case. If you look at the picture there is a green 'P' between Neutral and Drive.

I saw a video of the shifter in action. You press the park button and the shifter moves itself into park. I believe the park position is that green 'P' between Neutral and Drive, so I think one motion down would take you from Park to Drive.

I dunno...just a theory. I wish I could find the video showing it going into park.

I am thinking about getting the '07 BMW X5 (V8) for my wife, I was told that it won't make to the dealers floor until Thanksgiving Day. Any thoughts on the new SAV would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
I got an 04 3.0 with sports pkg for my wife and we love the car, and I mean car. Sure it's big like an SUV, but we have really enjoyed our X5. When our lease is up, if I can special order the new X5 in Imola Red, I'll get another one, if I can't then I'll have to buy the one we have, thats how much my wife loves this car.

Very dependable and secure to drive, not to mention fun and compfortable, get one you won't be sorry.

My guess...if it's anything like the 7-series, the button on the top marked 'P' is the button to press to get it into the 'Park' position. One click up is 'Reverse'; one click down is 'Drive'. One click to the left gets you into 'SD' (more agressive automatic shift program). Once in SD, a click up or down will engage manual shifting. Or perhaps the button on the left side of the knob allows you to switch back and forth between 'D' and 'SD'.
