all bmws are amazing in control, stability, and balance....
i use u be a VW fan still am a little, as i use to own a vw polo....that car was really slowww....but it had plenty of grip in dry weather....scary in the wet, but beautifull in the dry....those smal vw have more grip than you would expect from a small car, and the fact is that AWD cars have much much more grip during turns,,,,,feel free to test a 5 with an x-drive.. .and im sure u will come to the same conclusion....also i think that the vw has more torque on a wider rage...also the golf had a DSG which may have given it a small advantage....but its most likely the AWD that gave it such a big difference on track....
Agree with some, disagree with other things. Awd yes gives you more grip but on the other hand as a general roule an identic car but with rwd is always faster then it's awd brother. Faster at any chapter. Mainly because a rwd is lighter, gives alot more response, and it has more handling...it's more manouvrable. A skilled driver can drive his way arund a track faster than with a awd car, even in wet. Awd generally understeers alot, i know because i had a awd car. Rwd if pushed too hard oversteers but at least your pointed in the right way. Agree that dsg might have given an advantage but imo the main reason is the fact that on the 130i it wasn't such a good lap (as in driving). Watch especially the last 2 bends, where the car was seriously unbalanaced.

ur right the rwd cars are faster in a straight line....but the awd car is faster in turns this is espically clear in non dry roads....awd cars do understeer somtimes...espically in fast turnin manuvers...i have an awd car...but i tell u, once u enter the turn with grip u can push the car full power and then all u have to do is point and the cars computer shifts the power through the tires and u dont have to be a racing driver to control it....but its ture rwd cars are alot lighter...try it once go turn a corner then in the middle of the corner floor the gas...and see how awd cars shift the power..i have no idea what car u had...but im refering to a car the has active diffrentails that shift the power to the wheel with the most grip

I have a vw passat 4 motion also. Anyway my point is that i tested also the x drive from bmw and it didn't impress me that much. Not much of a difference with the old 4 motion abilities. It seemed that it didn't evolve by much. We had some cars to test at bmw performance days. 525i, 530i, 530xd,535d and an e60 m5. At slaloms i could do way better with a rwd car with dsc off, where in the awd it kept understeering and i had to back off alot to point it at the right direction and i don't find myself as a dumb driver. Really now...given it's bigger weight and it's format it can't be faster than a rwd on a normal track be it wet or dry. Except obviusly in snow. A 530i will always be faster than a 530xi on a normal track...be it wet or dry. Want to talk about clever awd systems, yes we'll talk about the awd in the evo IX wich imo is one if not the best awd systems in the world (for driving hard on a track).
Agree with you that at the limit an awd is safer. In a rwd you really have to be a sharp driver to know what you are doing, but it is the better set-up. Weight is a big factor in turns. Watch the clip at top gear when they tested the volvo s60 r wich also has a clever awd setup. The only awd i would consider is the one from the porsche 997 turbo but i sweared i would never drive anything but rwd cars. It's so much more fun....

Yeah. I liked them alot. The thing is that it will boost a bit the acceleration but i dunno by how much. What's the cost of a cai on an 130i?
