Auburn is one of my favorite old stops on the way to Tahoe. Why you ask? Because unless you stop in Davis first and hit up Murder Burger (now called RedRum Burger), this is the last In-n-Out before you hit the mountains. 
And as ro11dice said, the scenic drive is spectacular!
