I also came from an E46 to the E60 -- a very different drive as you wrote earlier. When recently ordering my new ride, I also considered going back to a 3er, however really enjoy the 5er driving experience, additional comfort and space, so another E60 is on its way
With the 535d, you have plenty of power and torque, so it shouldn't "feel" much slower than the 330cd. Probably also a wise choice to go for a more civalised drive with all the speed cameras in the UK -- constantly wanting to boot it in a high powered 3er would not be good for your licence or bank-account!

You should remap the ecu, excellent mpg together with another 30-35% more power!!
