These were great people and great BMW enthusiasts. They welcomed us newbies (e63) with open arms (well most did). Some are hard line e24 is the only car types.
I started out Thursday AM with 2 635s (e24s), 2 535s (e28) and myself. We cruised up 95 to 26 and on in to Greenville. About 50 miles out we picked up another 635 from Florida so we were 6 into the hotel. Started meeting and greeting folks right then. Really nice town with nice downtown area for dining and shopping.
Next day (Friday) was our day trip thru the twisties of SC and NC up to Saluda, NC via Ceasar?s Head State Park. About 55-65 BMWs all told. What a site. Great drive but somewhat hampered by poor planning on organizers part. Did not plan logistics of that many cars so we ended up with several pit stops to try to regroup. Not really a big deal but just could have been better. Lunch in Saluda and then return via a high speed run (nice clear 4 lanes where we got up to 115-120 MPH. Nice dinner and presentations, raffles for prizes that evening in hotel.
Saturday was the concours (e24s only) on the lawn in front of BMW Zentrum. What a site. 87 BMWs all together. Some e39, e46, e31, e63, e64, e9 and the bulk being e24s. fantastic day although it started out raining in the early AM. BMW was super by making a new M6 and Z4 M Coupe available for touchy, feely plus a few stomps on the gas pedal. People would pass by on the interstate and turn around to see what was going on so we had ?tourists? But I enjoyed the owners and the BMW employees that came out to see us most. Some of the BMW employees were Germans doing some training in US. Great discussions. I met one that worked on e63 coupes back in Dingolfing. I have pics of some trading of shirts I instigated as soccer players do after a match. Great fun. That night awards, raffle and tech presentations by some great folks. And a great dinner there at the Zentrum. Back to the hotel.
Next day ? Sunday ? was Autocross back at Zentrum in one of the parting lots. Thos was great fun. Only 20 cars participated and some of those were not even BMWs. I am (oops was) a rookie so I did not expect too much. But as it turned out I think I might have been in the middle of the pack. Times to be posted later. I departed right after I completed my last run for my 570 mile trip home. That was entirely uneventful although I did lead a little foursome of BMW 540i (e39), MB SLK 350, and a Magnum SLT in high speed run thru Georgia and Florida. Dropped the last one in Daytona. Made for a little friendly chase.
And again, Sharkfest 2007 is to be held April 20-22 in Ashville, NC. It will be for all BMW models. So save that date. It will be even more fun. Would be great to have a good e60 showing as well.
