Try explaining to someone why the following words all start with the same two letters, but are pronounced differently:

Character
Champagne (yes a French word, but it's in your English dictionary)
Champion
And why 'GH' sounds like 'F', as in cough, but doesn't make any sound, when it's in 'dough'

I've had great fun teaching my kids to read...

English is so difficult because we have SO MANY rules and we tend to break all of them at one time or another!
Yea it's difficult alright. Took me until I was at least 2 1/2 to learn it.....

and listening to the spoken word doesn't help often:

they're -they are- their- there
to - too - two
you're - you are - your

yet Boston is spelled the same whether you say "Boston" or , as they say on the East Coast "Baaahss-ton"
Creek is spelled "Creek" whether you say "Creek" or "Crick".
Quad-M is pronounced the same whether you say "Quad-M" or "that bastard Quad-M"

Really confounding, isn't it? And both are nouns!

Quite easy, actually. The words above were imported into the English language at different times, and for each time period the pronounciation in the French word had changed so the English pronounciation changed. (All three of them are from French/latin). I remember this because when I studied English at the University we had some classes on why things are pronounced they way they are...
