English is so difficult because we have SO MANY rules and we tend to break all of them at one time or another!

English is difficult, but try learning a language that does not have any prepositions (in the language), i.e., on, at, from, for, to, etc.

Finnish is painful...

Also, try learning a language that assigns a sex to everything, and I mean objects too. In Italian, the sky is male and the cloud is female. A car is female while a motorcycle is male, etc. Go figure.

This is more or less what I was alluding to in an earlier thread, and this is the type of intelligent discussion (well, this and stupid jokes, and bikini shots...) this forum should contain IMHO, so thanks p911t.

I taught English on the side in Costa Rica and Guatemala, and through that experience learned just what a goofy language it is. It is an extremely complex language full of contradictions, and I admire anyone who can communicate using it as a second language, much less be flawless about it. Try explaining to someone why the following words all start with the same two letters, but are pronounced differently:

Character
Champagne (yes a French word, but it's in your English dictionary)
Champion

Spanish, by contrast, is much more consistent. Pretty much, the rules are the rules, with relatively few exceptions: El problema, la mano, etc.
