Ok, we've had the "what's your top speed" topic, now what's your average speed?

We live in the land of the free (Nevada) and After having lived in Tennessee, Mississippi, Virginia, Florida, Texas, South Dakota, Nevada and California I have to say, this is the most stress free driving state I've ever lived in.

Last week I asked my wife what speed she normally drives on the freeway in her E60. (She uses it for her business and puts on avg. 2200 miles per month.) She responded 80mph. However I know from the passenger seat that her average speed is more like 90. Her last ticket (a few years ago) was in the spaghetti bowl, a huge exchange in the middle of the city going 95 in a 55 construction zone in a Celica.

I generally average 85 on the freeway and going on a trip I'm not uncomfortable at all setting the cruise control on 90 or so. That's only here in the land of the FREE.

What is your average speed?

Out of curiosity I compiled some statistics this morning from three places I've lived. From those I determined that Police presence produces idiot drivers and causes accidents. Here is my SCIENTIFIC study I completed over a period of 1 hour this morning without the help of any government grants!

There have been a number of studies that show speed variance of more than 15mph is the greatest contributor to accident rates and accident fatalities. VA (at least Northern VA) had speed limits of 55mph and 65mph in highways but traffic would normally travel between 80-85mph with a few pokey people driving 55-65mph (speed variance). Here in the Seattle area I hardly see anyone going over the speed limit!

Hard to see the roads in all that mist j/k

Grew up in Mukilteo pre I5 days, but when ever I get back all I see is grid lock along the I5 corridor.

Along I95 over on this side now I have two average speeds for highway (300 miles or more) : 74-76 with wife in car and 84-86 w/o wife in car.

Mine is generally high 30s to 40 mph. Even if I get in a long trip every so often, a week of commuting wipes it all out.

I completely understand the northern virginia speed differentials. people easily are doing 75-85 and posted speeds are 55-60.

that said. my avg. speed as of today is 31.6 mph. haha
