In NY, the majority of speed limits are 55 mph. So slow! I'm the 70 mph guy: not too fast, but not too slow.

I suppose you are so young that you don't remember the Iranian fuel crises in '79.
I used to live over there in '78 - '79.

The speed limits did go down to 55mph in allmost all the country. And there was limits to sell only 5 gallons per car. The gallon costed for the first time more than a buck.

Reporting from Houston, Texas. Speed limit on most freeway is 60 mph, but most people drive 75-80 mph. You see people drive 100 mph everyday when there is no traffic or the freeway is light. We have plenty of lanes and freeway. Be safe and don't drink and drive. Other than that, drive at the speed you feel safe. You can easily go 120 mph on the Beltway or major freeway for miles at the early AM or Sunday morning.

Again, just remember not to drink and drive. Be safe and don't get caught. You know the consequences of getting caught or killing someone or yourself.

Just saw on the news that in rural Texas, the speed limit is being raised to 85mph - anyone see this IRL yet?

INRIX, a firm that monitors vehicular traffic flow via GPS and mobile phones, clocked a top 5% of 88 mph in Arizona.

Here are the five fastest highways in the U.S.

In Texas a new law went into effect on 1 September for a speed limit of 85 mph. I suspect it will only be for highways out in West Texas though.
