That's my only gripe. When you watch HD, REAL HD, the picture is so incredible going back to regular TV sucks. Most people see my tv and say WOW what a picture! Then I switch to an HD football game (or the Red Sox World Series) and jaws drop. I don't think most people in the market for an HD TV realize it's limits. As you say it will take awhile for everything to be broadcast in true HD. I think I have 16 channels dedicated to HD programming, but half the time it's not HD. And often the width is cropped which can be more annoying, looking at grey bars on the otherwise black backround.

And another gripe is that an HD TiVo box is $1000.00!

Had my Panasonic TH-50PHD7UY 50" plasma delivered on the 8th. Been watching the NFL playoffs in High Definition and it's like looking through a 50" window onto the field.

Also in the main living area:
Sony progressive scan DVD changer
Sony STR-DE997 7.1 receiver
Bose AM10 5.1 speaker setup
Xbox
Comcast Motorola 6412 HD DVR

The rest of the sets in the house are 4:3 CRT's, although I'd like to replace them with equivalent LCD's.

I am going to ditch D* for a while for that exact reason. I can get a 2-tuner HD DVR from comcast and rent it for 4 years (conservatively) for what the D* HD TIVO costs. And with Comcast, if something newer comes out, I get it for free, and if the box craps out on me, it gets replaced for free, etc. etc. And that's not even taking into account that D* will be phasing out TiVo on it's equipment this year or that they're going to shift to MPEG4 from MPEG2, requiring all new dishes and receivers.

Maybe when D* starts beaming locals in HD (this summer in Atlanta) and debuts their "whole house" DVR network solution, I will go back. I will miss Sunday Ticket, but I didn't "use" ST for about a quarter of the season this year due to being out of town those weekends.

You can rent/lease boxes from Dish network also, and no charge for additional recievers.

I'm still watching a 15 year old Ferguson that we bought 2nd hand years ago, for 15 quid. The thing just doesn't want to die.

(got my eye on a nice plasma screen thought)

I purchased a 57" Samsung DLP 13 months ago over an lcd and plasma. It's not as thin (18" deep). I had the room so it didn't matter. The DLP doesn't attract dust and the picture looks very "smooth". It's highly adjustable and comes with speakers/amp that sound good enough until you get your home theater set up.
Good price in comparison to the larger plasmas.

The Samsung DLP picture is great, one other thing on the Tivo/DVR, you can get a HD DVR for Dish Network for $550, nearly half the DirecTV price. Only problem, no NFL package.
