My Ride: I have a 2007 Black Sapphire BMW 530i with SMG. It has the auburn interior, has PDC, Sports Package, Premium Package, rear automatic sunshades with manual side sunshades, 35% black tint, Upgraded angeleyes from Angelibrights, and Logic 7 Sound System

i would get the m3...you can order it the way you like where as with the 911 if you have to settle for the options and colors already there. Good luck!

What are the specs on the 911? The devil is in the detail. The base 997.1 Carrera doesn't have the performance components which are standard on the S - the larger engine, the active suspension nor the absolutely outstanding brakes from the 996 Turbo (they are multi-piston, and they don't fade. They are built to be tracked all day and you will never, ever, see brake fade. The M3 has single piston brakes that stop the car well but aren't really up to repeated hard use).
With the M3, you're essentially choosing between the manual or the automatic, with the 997 there are many more permutations. Without the specs on the car you're considering, it's tough to advise.
Ultimately, the M3 and the 911 don't get cross-shopped as much as you might think. They are very different cars built to different standards to do different things. If you can only have one car, the M3 is a compelling choice. If you can have more than one and can have cars built for a purpose, the 997 is still the benchmark in its class.

If you'll miss the extra room, and the 911 is really only a 2+2, the M3 is an excellent car. FWIW, the 997.1 S has a faster Nurburgring time and you'll see fewer of them, but you need to decide what you want out of the car. The 997 is more visceral (it is louder, firmer, stops better and has better steering), the M3 is very easy to drive fast, it looks good, it sounds good and is still very practical. It's a fantastic all-rounder. As I said, you've got to work out what you want. If you do look at the 997, be sure to get a PPI and be sure to get a DME readout to ensure that it hasn't been money-shifted (assuming it is a 6 Speed). The DME report highlights over-revs with six levels of severity. Porsche is OK with over-revs in levels one to 3, these cars are built to be bounced off the limiter and are built to be driven very hard, but over-revs in ranges 4 and up can start to get into warranty-voiding territory. Build quality is better on the 997, it is built like a tank, but the M3 is going to be cheaper to run and maintain.

Servicing mine has been running maybe $300 to $500 per year or so. That's at the dealer and I generally let them do a little more than is needed. Oil changes on the 997 are easy to do and a lot of owners will do their own so it can be less.
