Why do some companies like XoticPC and Sager offer it and others like Dell and HP don't?

Looking for another gaming core i7 laptop. Are the mobile core i7's as good as the desktop versions?

Thanks in advance.

Dell does on its higher-end LCD monitors.

It's also good to look and see what they mean by dead pixel. A dead pixel and a sub-pixel defect are not the same thing. You really want zero pixel or sub-pixel defects. A dead pixel is either all black or all white. A subpixel defect is characterized by it displaying the wrong color - meaning that it works, but one or more colors in the subpixel array is defective.

Guarantees that cover dead pixels don't always cover pixel defects.

Also, I didn't think there were mobile i5/i7 cores yet. I thought they were coming in Spring.

Generally speaking a mobile processor can never be "as good as the desktop versions" because the mobile processors have to cope with tight space and difficult ventilation/cooling. To keep the temperatures acceptable manufacturers "de-tune" those mobile procs. Also keep in mind that the mobile procs are also built with electricity consumption in mind because mobile devices are intended to work mostly on battery power.

Clarksfield - quad core mobile

Arrandale - dual core mobile

I agree, the mobile won't be as good, but it will be a sight better than the mobile CPUs we have now. The i5/i7 series of processors are a real leap, and it will be nice to have that architecture in a mobile platform.

The results from the new i5/i7 iMacs have been pretty spectacular. The i7 equipped machine in particular is a total screamer, for most tasks it's outperforming some Mac Pro models and the test results from MacWorld are just excellent.

Appreiciate everone's input.

Also, are Sager and Xoticpc reputable companies?

Yeah but the top of the line iMac with 2.8 i7 is still a tad slower than the Mac Pro 2.93. Also Mac Pro can go dual proc and thus leaving the iMac to dust, alas for different money.

But, indeed, the iMac with i5/i7 is really a great barging for what you get. Best performance+design+screen+(let's not forget OS)/money spent ratio out there.

And if people were afraid of Mac Pros being too slow, or thought Apple cannibalized the Mac Pro sales with the new i7 iMacs then click here!

I wouldn't expect anything other than that. The i5/i7 is Nehalem just like the Mac Pros, except the iMacs have the desktop CPUs compared to the server chips in the Mac Pros.

I can't comment on Xoticpc - but I have both done business with and referred friends to Sager in the past. I haven't had or heard of any problems with them.

Absolutely, Apple's always going to keep the Mac Pro line at the top of the tree. Those iMac numbers are very impressive, and it is indeed a fantastic machine, but Apple is always going to reserve the ultimate in performance for the Mac Pro.
