A half-Windsor actually makes a somewhat larger knot than a full-Windsor--kind of a misnomer. What may dictate some of the big knots on some of these guys is that they have thick necks. Therefore, more of the blade of the tire has to be used in the knot so it is inherently wider. You often see the opposite effect on really tall, thin guys, sice they have to use more of the back to make the tie long enough.

I think the Windsors in general are too triangular and symmetrical. I prefer a more European (mainly Italian, British, French) Cross-knot, which gives a larger knot than the basic 4-in-hand we all learned in primary school, but is not as symmetrical, or up-tight looking IMHO. Also, the knot you select should be in relation to the spread of the collar. You may need a Windsor derivative at times to fill the gap in a wide spread British collar, or to offset the bulkiness of a high standing double throat button Italian collar.

I'm surprised someone didn't tackle him before he was able to leave the house in that tie!

Its nice to see someone else understands ties, how they work with shirts, etc. i had to do a lot of research when i got out of the military and started wearing suits. i think there is an article in GQ which describes how to tell who a guy is by what he was wearing. the giant tie knot was part of the attire on "the asshole" i think. i am 6'2? and i dont get a huge knot, regardless of how i tie it because i am getting a lot of the small end.
Craig, try this Cross knot next time. It will use more of the blade and make the knot a bit thicker without looking like half a grapefruit up there. You're only a couple of inches taller than me, so it shouldn't make much difference. By tall, I was referring to some of the ex-NBA guys on ESPN. If they buy off the rack, they're screwed. Also, remember that the tip of the front blade should be just about even with the top of your belt buckle. If it's much longer, you'll use more of the back and get a skinny knot. Try to buy woven rather than printed ties as they are bulkier and hold a knot better. In case anyone is curious, I have a side business.
