...as in performance oriented...the new cab has ~47more hp but has grown in proportions and has gained 200lbs..id give up 47hp for a 200lb weight redux any day, so the opposite can only be a certain negative...

My 2000 540i had it and so did my 2002 X5 4.4i. I don't recall any BMW V8 that didn't pay the tax.

However, I agree that some of the newer cars have dropped the ball. I've owned many 5 series but I'm not longer tempted by the F10 and I'm waiting for the F30 as a replacement for my 5-er.

All of the models have grown up and the F10 is roughly the size and weight of the E38 7 series. The F10 is a fine car but I don't see it as the wolf in sheep clothing anymore. That wolf ate the sheep! The 3 series (F30) may be the new middle child that I hope will have that right blend of comfort with an emphasis on performance. While the 1 series is akin to the E30 and will grow to the size of the E36 during the next revision.
sorry, was referencing my coupe vs the cab..my 645 ci coupe did not have any guzzler tax (nor did the 650 coupe as its not listed in the referenced doc above), and one would think that the new bs mantra of bmw about green and efficiency would lead to them building a new car that would no longer fall under this tax situation as that was one of the main drivers in their concept of using turbo vs natural aspiration.

Im in agreement that the F10 is now the old 7 series, I did a detail analysis on the F10 section on this subject, and agree that the F30 3 series will take on the role of the old e39 5er as it will have the near identical proportions, i just hope they provide all the options in the new 3er like HUD and the active suspensions to make it a winner....
