This is scary. I had worked for a large large large company a few years ago, and we had sent 50+ people to go and rework the service contracts with WAMU.
Basically, a lot of stuff got back-loaded on a 5 yr contract. I'm sure WAMU did the same thing with other contracts they had, mainly to help the books in the short run.
Anyway, my point is - a lot of non-financial companies are going to be huge creditors... billions of dollars are being left unpaid, and I'm sure it's the same tune at the other dead financial corporations. I mean, you kind of assume that the big name suppliers of products/services will be creditors (in the bankruptcy sense of the word) for these dead companies, but I'm not sure ordinary people realize how aggressive some of these banks were in restructuring debt and contracts when the loan market started slowing down.
Oh, and free checking was nothing.
I had an account with SeaFirst Bank (Seattle's First) back in the early 90s (bought by WAMU). They had this insane policy... if you waited in line more than 5 minutes, they gave you $5!!! Imagine being a college kid and knowing that? I'd go at lunchtime when the line was 20+ people long, and it would still only be a few seconds past 5 minutes. Great service! It was nice getting $5 for lunch once in a while.
