Windows Movie Maker or Apple iMovie.

If you want to create XVid/DiVX from DVD then I recommend Auto Gordian Knot for PC.

I used the following to encode the video files

http://www.dropshots.com/ but

I think

www.youtube.com is the most powerful

nowadays I go there to look at buyers opinion before buying any product... very useful

If you want to share a big size video file such as 1 GB, then the best way is to use bittorrent or DC++ softwares.

If you want to reduce the size in order to broadcast it in one of the above web sites then I found an easy to use software (video wave ). if you want a professional one then go for Adobe Premiere.

You can use Quicktime Pro for 29.95. It is a great product that will covert to H.264 which is has outstanding compression.

You don't say what platform you're using but Handbrake may work if you're on OS X. And it's free. You should be able to get good mpeg4 with handbrake.

Try VirtualDub. If you have a yahoo messenger address or email i can send it. It's only 1.5 MB and it works great, and it's easy to use and you can choose alot of encoding methods.

Windows Media Encoder is free (always has been) - runs on Windows. A wealth of high quality codecs are at your disposal.
