Re: Cigar Lighter plug in charge adapters.

Is the output of all these common 12 volt adapters the same?

For example, I have an OEM 12 volt charge adapter that was supplied with a Magellan GPS and one supplied with a Moto RAZR2 V9x phone.

Can I use the same adapter on both devices? Assume plug style matches.

Not at the same time of course! (For any smart ass who would insert that thought!)

Thanks

12V = 12V, but you need to make sure the polarity is the same.
Usually, if the plug style matches, it works... But if the polarity is different, which is unusual, it wont.

1 - No, the amperages can be different

2 - If the plug style matches, make sure the amperage output doesn't exceed the amount required by whatever it is you are connecting the adapter to. Usually the plug size relates to the amp output, but its good to check anyway.

Correct.

I totally forgot about the amp.

But on the two mentioned devices neither should be a problem.
But I doubt the plug is the same, even if the specs are the same.

You'd think BUT ....

Both use a mini-USB so you think they would both supply 12V to the devices without problem. Afterall it works for all other USB power plugs / devices!

WRONG ! ! If you use the Magellan USB 12V charger for the Motorola RAZR your phone will reply with "Unauthorized Charger"!! Motorola seems to supply power to its phones at different pins on the USB!!! DUMB STUPID ... but it gets you to buy and use a dedicated charger for your Motorola phones.

BTW, if you use a 12 USB adapter and try to use the data cord supplied by Mototola for that phone to power it ... that won't work either!! DUH

Motorola RAZRs expect a pulse in the signal. If the pulse is not detected then the phone wont charge. I had a utility for my old Powerbook that would pulse the USB port on the laptop to simulate this and allow the RAZR to charge from a standard USB cable. It's been years though so I don't know if that's changed.

Thanks, guys.

Sounds like the consensus ranges from no to risky. So I'll go with the no.

My damn new MINI has only one 12V receptacle that is close so I will just carry the two adapters.
