SAFE!? is the name of a working party that has been founded on the initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport, the VDAT (Association of German Car Tuners) and Messe Essen (Essen trade fair company) as the holder of the Essen Motor Show, the world?s leading tuning fair. The scheme is being supported by tire manufacturer Hankook as well as by numerous other organizations and companies. At a press conference today, Dr. Manfred Stolpe, German Federal Minister of Transport, presented ?TUNE IT! SAFE!? to the public.
Contrary to the general economic trend, tuning is gaining in popularity in Germany. Car enthusiasts spend 4.4 billion euros each year on the personalization of their vehicles. And the trend continues. Although reputable tuning companies place strong emphasis on dependability, safety and responsibility, the market abounds with inferior and often illegal products and supposedly inexpensive pirated copies, ranging from spoilers to rims. It is this safety risk that industry, government, associations and the public authorities now wish to counter together in a nationwide campaign involving fair promotions, advertisements, posters, online presentations, press and public relations and many other activities. Everything you need to know about the first ?safe tuning? campaign can be found at www.tune-it-safe.de. The campaign message will be communicated to the target group via numerous other media.
Huge knowledge gap particularly among young tuning fans
Industry and transport experts have identified a huge knowledge gap particularly among young tuning fans. What is allowed? Which products am I permitted to use, and which test certificates are required? How do I protect myself from piracy and forged parts certificates? It is usually out of ignorance that many a young motorist equips his car with illegal parts ? and not only risks the loss of his car registration and insurance coverage, but also endangers himself and other motorists.

TUNE IT! SAFE! was presented today to the public at a press conference in Essen. ?Over the last few years, there has been a noticeable increase in questionable tuning parts on the market. Disreputable suppliers are exploiting the enthusiasm of their mainly young customers by selling them cheap and regrettably illegal tuning products, which are also of poor quality as well. These include above all spoiler parts, chassis, mufflers and extra headlamps. Often these products have no or forged certificates and are dubious not only for this reason. The safety factor must also be considered, because only reliable and safe tuning yields the expected pleasure. Unfortunately, prohibited add-on parts, unadjusted brakes and over-extravagant spoilers are not rare, particularly on the vehicles of young owners. The goal of the TUNE IT! SAFE! scheme is to combat illegal and unsafe tuning with a Germany-wide campaign,? says Stolpe. It is important to address consumer and manufacturer groups directly and call for a safe procedure for all motorists that conforms to regulations, the Minister added. ?Young drivers in particular have to be educated about the possible risks of tuning, such as piracy, forged certificates and unapproved parts. The scheme creates a platform for actively giving advice so that safety is not impaired by modifications to vehicles,? Stolpe continued. ?We have to actively inform the public so that inferior and unsafe products don?t have a chance. Together we must combat illegal products and supposedly inexpensive pirated parts ranging from spoilers to rims.?
Broad-based consumer education
Broad-based consumer education is therefore the goal of the scheme supported by the automobile associations, test and certification organizations, associations and companies from the car industry, ministries and public authorities. ?Other institutions and companies operating in these fields are still of course welcome to join,? stresses VDAT President Bodo Buschmann. In his view, this pooling of resources represents a key factor in protecting the industry. ?The roughly 500 German tuning companies provide about 30,000 secure and skilled jobs.? The VDAT is already actively involved in bringing international regulations on tuning into line with the German standard of quality. The VDAT has also taken the first steps towards the founding of a European Tuning Association. There and in Brussels, the voices of German experts will carry a good deal of weight, because Germany is Europe?s No. 1 tuning nation by a long way.

The supporting organizations and the Ministry of Transport are launching ?TUNE IT! SAFE? at the Essen Motor Show, Germany?s biggest tuning fair. The scheme is being sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Construction and Housing, HANKOOK tires, VDAT (German Tuning Association), ADAC and AVD (German automobile associations), BRV (Federal Association of the Tire Trade), DVR and DVW (German road safety associations), DEKRA e.V., eBay Motors, the Essen Motor Show (world fair for car tuning, motor sports and classics), the ?Gib acht im Verkehr? (?Take Care on the Roads?) scheme, GT? (Technical Monitoring Society), HELLA KGaA Hueck & Co., KBA (Federal Office for Motor Traffic), North-Rhine/Westphalia police force, T?V NORD GmbH and T?V Rheinland Group (technical control boards), and Zentralverband Deutsches Kraftfahrzeuggewerbe e. V. (Central Association of the German Motor Vehicle Trade).
