Hi,

Can I be cheeky and ask for some travel advice?

My wife, 17 year old son and I will be based near Trenton, NJ for a couple of weeks with my brother and his family, and I'm sure they've got a lot lined up for us involving NY City, six flags etc.

As we have a car booked, we thought we'd take ourselves off for a few nights.

So far the best idea we've come up with is to do a round trip, stopping at three (as yet unknown) hotels. The loop would go into PA, perhaps visiting the Amish, and\ or some native indian center. We would then head up to Toronto via Niagara Falls and the Lady of the Mist before coming back.

That's as far as we've figured it...

I'd be grateful for any advice on filling out that itinary (good hotels, etc) or indeed for suggestions of more interesting 3 night trips starting and finishing near Trenton...I don't mind paying a few Dollars for a special hotel or such like.

Thanks to anyone who takes a moment to reply.

1. Easy train ride to NYC on NJ Transit ... about 1.5hrs and less stressful and cheaper than driving.
2. Drive East to the Jersey Shore ... good walking boardwalks in Ocean City & Wildwood. Leave some money in the Atlantic City Casinos too! Travel south from those seaside towns to Cape May - more relaxing shore community. You might even find a few hotel deals mid-week ... tourism is down!
3. West into Pennsylvania for Amish country
4. The City of Philadelphia offers some history and culture at the Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the Art Museum
5. Before you leave take a ride to the NJ Motorsports Track in Millville NJ http://www.njmotorsportspark.com/

If you want to see some nice country, get in an exhilerating drive and meet some of our NYC area E60.net members, come out to our July 25th meet that begins at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall in Rockaway, NJ and goes through the Pocono Mountains in Eastern Pa, Sussex County, NJ, Orange County, NJ and Harriman State Park in New York. It's a great drive and you'll meet some great people. Given that you live across the pond, feel free to come in any car.

The thread for the meet is in my sig line. The first post in the thread has all of the info you need. If interested, put your name on the sign up list in that thread.

You may consider Washington, DC and the surrounding area. It's reachable by train as well.

Are you aware that the Amish country in PA is in Lancaster county???LOL!! I'd suggest the Plain and Fancy Farm restaurant if you make it to visit the Amish, its an institution in the area and a good family spot.

Also, in the same amount of time that'd take to drive to Niagra and Toronto, you could visit places like Cape Cod or Province Town in MA if you want a beach, and ofcourse long island, NY has some of the nicest places out east in the Hamptons and Montauk...really depends on what you and your family wants to do, but there is no shortage of possibilities!

+1 on the Cape Cod and Montauk trips. Get out of the rust belt (PA/Ohio/Western NY).

You may consider Washington, DC and the surrounding area. It's reachable by train as well. For a driving paradise out of DC, head west on Interstate 66 a little over an hour to reach Front Royal, Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visit Luray Caverns, Charlottesville, VA (the home of the University of Virginia) and Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello.

For the most unbelievable meal you will ever eat (but it's a fortune), eat at the Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Va. -- probably the top-rated restaurant on the eastern seaboard: http://www.theinnatlittlewashington.com/ Reservations in advance are essential. Washington, Virginia is in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I lived in Virginia for four years when I was in my twenties and the Virginia countryside is really beautiful.

It's a sincere invitation. I could care less what kind of car the OP shows up in. It would just be a blast for the NY area members to meet the OP and his son.

+1 on The Inn at Little Washington. It's one of the top 10 restaurants in the world. I used to live in the Northern VA area and enjoyed the food there but bring your wallet. I'm now in Washington State where we have the Herb Farm - another on the top 10 list. http://theherbfarm.com/
