I happen to live in one of those towns which (around Eastern MA anyway) is referred to as a "People's Republic." Generally this is a pejorative term and usually means that the residents tend to be affluent with lots of higher education, and a decided inclination to make sure that everyone is behaving as a good citizen should. I've noticed lately that the numbers of Toyota Prius vehicles on the streets seem to have increased, and that a trip of any distance around here seems to put me behind a Prius poking along just below the speed limit. I figure these vehicles are the new ride of choice of the People's Republic set, and have displaced the slowly-driven, dirty, clunky Volvo wagon. I surmise there must be a prominent instant MPG readout right in the middle of the dash, making sure the driver feels virtuous as he/she pokes along.

Rant over.
There's a good reason for the slow driving.

Two of our employees chose Prius. They have discovered that it's actually impossible to get anywhere near the advertised mpg. My E60 is more economical on a long drive. On a motorway (highway) the electric motor is fully charged in minutes and has all the beneficial effect of a lead weight thereafter.

When they use the car for a business trip, they are recompensed for the fuel they should have used according to the manufacturers specification, which of course is unobtainable (by a large margin). They are basically subsidising the company every time they go on a business trip...

They end up driving slowly so that the trip costs them a little less.

The Prius is only remotely attractive if you live and work in the centre of London. You avoid the congestion charge and the whole electric motor\ petrol engine starts to make a bit of sense. But only a bit. A small, cheap Citroen diesel will give much better economy and doesn't use the equivalent of the resources of a former French protectorate to build...

Ever read about the actual environmental impact of the Prius.
So, in order to be economical and environmentally contious; we should speed around in high power to weight ratio cars; thereby getting to our destinations sooner and preserving the environment.
I'm thinking Z06 or another M3( i like the back seat).
I can do that.

I prefer a small economical 4 cylinder two seater like the Exige S over the Z06

In another note I was in Northampton back long ago on a date on "coming out day". It was quite an experience. I think the entire student body of Smith College was 'coming out'.
