In my last BMW ('00 740i sport), did 145 MPH very late at night on an empty stretch of highway. Also did 135 MPH on same highway in my Carrera, but caught up to traffic and had to slow down...3 exits later, there was an M3 pulled over...

Seriously, the car handles superb, and even if it's not a straight it's no problem at all!

Ack! I voted in haste. Remembered I drove about 220 km/h on a stretch of Autostrada in a Lancia sedan about 20 years ago. Got passed like I was standing still by a black Mercedes S-class going I'd guess 260 km/h. And he just flashed his lights to let me know I was NOT supposed to be in the left-hand lane.
Scary part was seeing the Fiat Pandas in the right-hand lane that were incapable of more than about 80 km/h. Their seats looked like lawn chairs.![Embarrassment](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/ohmy.gif)
In the US I have not exceeded 135 mph; that in a 1969 Camaro with a 327 2-bbl and a Hurst shifted 4-speed. On a flat, straight Indiana county road. I would NEVER exceed 100 in most US states. Maybe in Nevada or Montana; too much congestion otherwise. Though I had a friend in Alabama who claimed to routinely travel from Montgomery to Atlanta in about 1.25 hours (it's 150 miles or so, so figure it out). He used either a Ferrari Dino or Lotus Elite. He claimed never to exceed 180.

I hit ~140-145 on a clear stretch around santa barbara. I might add that a steptronic 645 was left a few car lenghts back as for some reason he could not keep up.
At the time I thought of the popo and quickly got on the brakes. I somewhat wish I stayed on it for a bit longer, perhaps shifting to fifth and hitting the limiter.

On my stretch of Rte 2, which I drive every AM, the Stateies run a Laser trap at least once a week, sometimes more. I'll typically run around 70-80 on my way into work, then slow down about 1/2 mile from their "typical" trap.
It makes my morning when someone trying to prove something blows right by me once I slow down and they fall right into their trap.
