The Xoom is the latest in this long line of pretenders, and it will go the same way as its predecessors. It is the ecosystem that sells and makes the iOS devices what they are. There are probably close to 400,000 iOS apps, and close to a quarter of them are iPad native. This is, coupled with elegant hardware, a proper tablet OS and true usability is why they sell. The Xoom lacks the ecosystem, is a "me-too" device that doesn't differentiate itself, and it's more expensive than the iPad.

The Xoom can't support Flash today. It is supposedly "coming". Even when it does, it will join a long line of mobile devices with utterly mediocre support for an archaic technology. Having mediocre Flash support is categorically *not* better than having no Flash support. Why? Not being able to lazily rely on Flash has meant that iOS developers have to build apps that are designed from the ground up to run on iOS and take advantage of the features of the device, not the feature set of an old technology such as Flash. As m630 noted, Adobe's release of Wallaby is tacit acknowledgement that iOS is where its developers tell them they need to be.

Oh, and Skele, I'm reliably informed that there is a veritable ton of porn that you can view natively right on the iPad. This is an industry that above all follows the money And the money is in iOS. Grab an iPad and knock yourself out ( or should that be knock one out)
Well said

Its a joke that people point to Flash as a comparision. Flash is old tech, just get over it already. It is not optimized for mobile devices, its power/resource hungry and will be replaced by html5 and the like. When Xoom sells 20million units, perhaps one can tout it success or it advancement over the iPad, but that aint happening, applw will have sold 100million by the time that occurs.
If you don't like apple or the iPad, so be it, but don't rag on it out of fear of you sacred windows OS, its the true weakness in the ms equation. Apple innovates and MS copies, just like old times, again.
I LOVE Apple products. I have an iPhone 4 and use Macs in personal computing.

BUT, I don't want to be limited by the iPad's inability to show certain sites. Some sites just HAVE to be viewed - I don't give a sh!t if they are flash or ANY other tech. If I need to see a site, I don't want to have to search for a PC, just bc Apple thinks flash runs down the battery.

That said, it is true that you don't really see too many flash sites anymore, so it maybe a much more minor issue than MS people would want you to believe.

I'm the opposite - I think... no, I know Apple has great products. But I want to be fair. Beyond anything else, even if I opt for an iPad, I want to be informed of it's limitations.

See, I waited for the "2", bc I do need cameras for Skype - I have family overseas, who I see very seldom. To me, an iPad with a camera is a GREAT device. And sure, there are some limitations. But as Steven pointed out, Xoom doesn't support Flash yet either.

I may be wrong but I believe the Apple technician told me that there is an adapter for the iPad 1 and iPad 2 allowing USB access -about $20 USD. Anyone know for sure?

http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC531ZM/A

It lists at $29 but is available for a lot less. This will let you connect a camera but also works with many other USB devices including keyboards and skype headsets etc.

People that are technically challenged can't understand some basics about Flash on mobile touch devices like the iPad or the iPhone. As some of you may know Adobe has never ever built from the ground up a Flash player for the mobile world, especially for the touch-only devices. Some mobile OSes only adopted the desktop Flash player. So letting aside the fact the not being optimized Flash would be a huge resource killer and a crasher for the apps, people don't understand the basic idea that some Flash content on the www will never work on a touch based mobile device. For example some Flash sites require a hover action with the mouse pointer for them to reveal some menus or options. Keyword "hover action" not click. Tell me how can you hover on a touch mobile device where you don't have a pointer?

This is just one issue and one specific example that can't be resolved on a touch device.

But hey Apple is the evil one... and if that makes you sleep better at night so be it and stay away from Apple products.
