In film size matters. Imax uses a 70mm negative...

The Wiki mentions DMR - if you do a find on the page, that's the information that will be most important to understanding how it would differ. The IMAX site has some info too...

The DMR process is used on feature films - scanning the film and then manipulating it in the digital domain so that it is optimized for 70mm printing and projection in the IMAX theaters. The other big difference is that the soundtrack is generally uncompressed digital vs. the compressed stuff found in regular theaters. I have found the difference to be pretty significant. DLP cinema releases are often uncompressed digital audio as well.
Part of my interest in IMAX Superman Returns is seeing how the original capture matrix of 1920x1080 looks on a 70mm print after processing. AOTC was digital to DMR, but was shot on a crappier cam. Besides, I never saw it in IMAX. It looked great in DLP though.

I saw it and really liked it. As a youngster, I also saw "Superman and the Mole Men" when it was first out. Has anyone else seen this classic clult movie? Check this link out if interested.
