I have been salivating over the new WHDI spec. Full HDMI wirelessly - uses the 5GHz spectrum. Sharp announced support for it in its upcoming high-end LCD line.
Won't be too long until we get this integrated in our receivers, components, displays, etc...
Then we can pass 7.1 audio wirelessly... not to mention full 1080p video.

If you were in the market today (no WHDI spec available), what would you get?

I am more of a hi-resolution audio guy. There's also the fact that I live in a condo and not a big house, I don't have the need to distribute audio in the manner we're talking about here.
I have flirted with the idea of the packaged solutions, but I simply don't need anything like this. I set up an airport express for my sister, it works pretty well.
If you're looking for a visual interface, I'd say there are interesting things happening with Vista.
For me, I'd rather see a visual remote that can control all my music - something like the Squeezebox Duet that has a small iPod-like control. I'm just driving one stereo, but I might be anywhere in the condo.

I'm more a video guy anyway... I'm really excited about this - the Slingcatcher. I have been since January 2007 when they announced it. Sling has been working to perfect it, and they say it's close to being finished. It's like Apple TV, but more extensible and flexible. It doesn't force you to buy storage.

I'm a SlingBox guy myself (have two of them) and I've been reading about the SlingCatcher too but unless I'm missing something, I don't see much to get excited about...
