I too make it a make it a practice to check snopes and it is a good place to confirm the validity / accuracy of information like this. This child's situation described in the OP appears reasonable. The clarifying information provided by the child's parents adds additional clarity.

Aw. This is sad and devastating for a family. Kids are amazing and its important to teach them to be strong, yet crave those moments. (im laying in bedcwith my sons now).. god bless Hunter and his family.
