I have a few friends who give me a great deal of stick about driving a BM.

Even one of the companies clients has a poster on his wall at work with a mockup of the DVLA private registrations with an X5 and 'W4NKR' written on the plate and the slogan 'let people know more about you' or somesuch. However hes a Merc man and has an E55 and an AMG spec C class so what does he know ?

On the road its rare ill get let out at junctions with a polite wave. Its rarer still that anyone will thank me for waiting if the road is blocked and only one car can get through at a time.

The junction thing has struck me as somewhat odd. People seem to assume that because you drive a BMW you are going to push your way out in an agressive manner. As such they dont flash you out because they expect you to go anyway.

However because you dont get flashed out and theres no gap being left you end up having to push your way out in true BMW style... Hence the problem.

Its a self fulffilling prophecy.

Everyone expect BM drivers to be arrogant on the road so they leave no gaps and no spaces and rarely let you out.

As a result you are forced to push your way out in an agressive manner or youd be sitting at a junction for all eternity.

Maybe this is just a UK thing im not sure...

hey JayJAy come to Brussels and have fun, 0-from garage-18-doors locked-50m after 0 km/h stop for 5 min. then 0-5-30-0-20-30-0-50-20-0-70 in the tunnels-0-10... that is it almost 5m of a car sometime you have to use PDC and push a bit I also try to be patient but when some sits in the car and morning rush to the office mode is on, nobody is moving just dreaming or I do not know what they do in the car, there comes BMW's (truck HORN) it is so powerful sometimes I use it, last time my window was down and I was shocked how reall strong sound it has but even in jams I have active seat, L7 pumping and extended AC on= no problems, just the 'sheer driveing pleasure!'

I've noticed exactly the same behaviour in the UK. I used to drive a Merc and would be let out at junctions most of the time. Since switching to the BM - not a hope.

In addition to the E60, I also drive a Mini. The exact opposite is true with the Mini - people are very willing to let you out at junctions and leave you space when you join motorways. I guess because it is a more fun car, without the blue and white badge on the front, people are more curtious.

According to some not so scientific studies (car talk and some insurance company studies) the VW Jetta driver is supposed to be the most arrogant and offending driver in the US. I tried watching for this phenomena and thought I saw a hint of it, but was not that obvious to me. However, it did appear that several lower cost ?sporty? versions of Hondas, VW, Mitsubishi, Lexus, etc., kinda fell in that same aggressive pattern. At least in my normal driving locations I sure did not see any real aggressiveness on the part of BMWs, MB, Lexus Luxo types, - not counting myself of course

You're probably right but I drive the same whatever car I'm in (Bad habits and all!)

However, I always give way, indicate and let people in appropriately. I normally react to those who are deliberately trying to queue-jump etc... (Bizarrely rarely BMW drivers in my experience...)

I don't think BMW has quite the wanker reputation in the US. Maybe only the ones who actually drive dangerously.

But now that you mention it, sometimes I wonder whether I try to drive more courteously, like flashing to let people cut in, as a kind of PR to make sure people don't think I'm a jerk just because I'm in a sporty, expensive car.

I still find pickup truck and SUV drivers to be the most aggressive and annoying.

I find that while an expensive sports car driver might make an aggressive, fast move here and there, they are careful and respectful. They have more to lose if they get in an accident, for one thing.

Your point and observation are interesting. I have heard that a BMW bias exists in the US, but I have never encountered one. It all seems the same to me no matter what car I am driving--although there may be a small positive camaraderie bias depending on the car I am driving.

totally agree with you my friend same situation here in Europe. SUVs are too much self-confident like a tank
