We do have the 1 Series (2 dr.) in the US, since early '08. If it's the small 4 dr. that's been on sale in other markets (since about '04 I believe--at least that's when I first saw one in Swaziland), I think there might be a small market for it. However, I doubt BMW will ever bring it here since they want to maintain their sport/luxury niche rather than dilute the brand by trying to be all things to all people. Even BMW SUVs are seen as luxury "cars" to most. Fiat, on the other hand, has no presence at the moment, hence nothing to lose. If they can play up the small, sporty, Italian panache (much like Vespa has done recently), they might have a legitimate shot.
