School bus traffic sting generates tickets, controversy in South Pasadena.
More than 160 people received $500 traffic citations Wednesday as part of an elaborate sting by the South Pasadena Police Department involving a decoy school bus complete with people walking on and off the vehicle.
The sting ? designed to nab motorists who fail to stop for school buses with flashing red lights ? has generated debate in the city. Some think the program was unfair, charging that the location was unusual for a school bus, the officers created a distraction, and there were no schoolchildren present.

(a) The driver of any vehicle, upon meeting or overtaking,
from either direction, any schoolbus equipped with signs as required
in this code, that is stopped for the purpose of loading or unloading
any schoolchildren and displays a flashing red light signal and stop
signal arm, as defined in paragraph (4) of subdivision (b) of
Section 25257, if equipped with a stop signal arm, visible from front
or rear, shall bring the vehicle to a stop immediately before
passing the schoolbus and shall not proceed past the schoolbus until
the flashing red light signal and stop signal arm, if equipped with a
stop signal arm, cease operation.
It sounded more like the police caused confusion around the school bus. They should argue in court that the purpose was not to load and unload school children but to entrap drivers.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't stop for school buses though!

You break the rules, you pay. Hopefully, the ones who got tickets will warn others. If common sense doesn't work, then a ding to the wallet might.
I mean, come on. When I see kids on the sidewalk, especially here in the burbs (not so street-wise), I go into hyper-vigilant mode. They could dart out into the street or a friend could be goofing around and push them, whatever. They're kids, and I practically come to a stop when I see them near the street. I sure a lot of you guys do the same.

Was a $500 ticket even enough?

I dont have kids, i dont even like kids, and i slow down to a crawl with kids in sight and i think everyone else should too. it is a pretty simple concept. It is everyones responsibility to be cognizant of children in the street. example, if i was outside in my apartment and kids were playing, and someone drove by like an asshole, i would stop them and light them up. maybe i have that neighborhood watch ex-military douchebag thing going on. maybe it is because i am 6'2" 220 lbs and i work out 2 hours a day and i am always hopped up on supplements and angry and i have the ability to make a difference by instilling the fear of an ass beating
i pretty much dont like people in general, but endangering children and animals i have no tolerance for and if someone endangers or hurts a child or animal in front of me, they will become the victim of a brutal beat down by yours truly.
anyway, the point i am trying to make is, you dont have to be a parent to understand the importance of being careful around children. and you dont have to be a parent to do something about it. as able bodied adults, it is our duty to protect the helpless. parent or not. at least that is how i feel.
i lived on a long culdesac when i was young, and there was this guy that drove a loud ass monte carlo, and he would get up to about 70 MPH and everyone would run. all the kids where scared of him. one day my mom screamed at him and he turned around and threatened to kill her. i was traumatized. I remember how this nut was perceived in the neighborhood, so now i am like driving miss daisy whenever kids are ANYWHERE in eyesight. anyways, that guy needed an ass beating.
