if you're pinging on pump gas, you probably have other issues.

This might be a good time to revive the very old thread about the "benefits" of using fuel with a higher than recommended octane.
i dont know if you want to... some members get alil emotional since they havent got a clue about octane.

We can debate the benefits / harms of using toluene as an octane booster, but no one with an E60 should be getting pinging from using lower octane fuel. Th engine management software will detect this and adjust the timing to prevent pinging. You will loose some performance , but you will not getting pinging or damage the engine.
Indeed! I just finished a 2k mile drive with my e60 and never once did the engine ping when using 85 to 87 octane. What I did find interesting was that the miles per gallon remains the same regardless of the fuel octane but sluggishly accelerates with low octanes 85 to 87.

85? they still sell those?? absolute minimum should be 87!

edit: didnt realized you have a 550... you should not be using regular!!! why wouldnt you want to take an advantage of the full performance of the engine using premium? definitely dont use regular in hot summer days.

I see plenty of stations with 93 in east coast (particularly in tristate area)

Since we're back on this subject. How come you guys find 93 at your local chevrons. The ones around me only have 91. Any other gas stations sporting 93?

Thanks
