Talk about a die-hard fan! Sorry, couldn't resist that...

Yeah, that was all over the news here...

Here's an article from the local paper that likely started the other news agencies to pick it up:

Clearly, the Steelers have some serious fans...

When I tell people I'm from Pittsburgh originally, they always ask me if I'm a Steeler fan.

I tell them that being a fan is a birthright. Even with that kind of a description, you can't really convey what it means to be born and raised there.

My 89 year old grandmother is a huge fan, gets worked up and watches them every time they're on.

You are right on the money about the fan base here but what's more amazing is how many non-Pittsburghers are die hard fans.

I always chuckle at the television announcers when watching an away game when they say that the Steeler fans "travel well" as they describe the abundance of visible Steeler fans in the other team's stadium. These fans didn't travel well, they live in or around that city! Sure, some fans make the pilgrimage from Pittsburgh but nobody seems to get the fact that there is an abundance Steeler fans all over the country!

Yeah, many of us were kids back in the '70s and the Steel Curtain days. They were great fun to watch and I think that carries thru to the modern day where many of us are Steeler fans on some level.

I agree that the 70's had a lot to do with creating the "Steeler Nation".

I have to believe that another factor is the stability of the franchise itself -- celebrating it's 75th year, the Rooney family, very few coaching changes over the years, etc. It's an easy team to root for...unless you're in Cleveland!
