Ernie Stautner died today, 80.
He was our HeadCoach in Frankfurt with the Galaxy from 1995-1997 (NFL EL) and won the WorldBowl in 1995, lost it in 1996.
A very cool guy. Even with his age he still showed the players stuff/drills himself.
He once told me that even with all his knowledge and all the years he spent in pro football he is still learning and seeing something new every day.
Stautner played in NINE ProBowls, played 14 years for the Steelers and then coached 23 years in Dallas. He is the ONLY Steeler whose Jersey (#70) got officially retired!
An OUTSTANDING career, a great person.
My first coach I worked for... I will never forget him...
RIP Ernie!

Here's a "breaking news" story from one of our newspapers...

I didn't realize he coached the Galaxy -- pretty cool Iceman that you were able to get to know him! Thanks for posting the pics, I love the one of him with "The Chief" (Art Rooney).

It's a sad day.
Ernie Stautner is the reason I started to work in pro football.
I feel honored to had a chance to meet such an outstanding personality. A guy who truly loved the game and tried to give a little bit of his passion to others.
On my flight to Munich today I had time to think about the good times. All I can say is: Pro Football has lost one of its best all-time players/coaches.
Rudy, what Jill said in the post-gazette, that "he was proud of his Cowboys Super Bowl rings, and the proudest thing he had in the world was his Hall of Fame ring" is really true. He NEVER took the Hall of Fame ring off his right ring finger. But he was not wearing the SuperBowl rings very often. So the time with the Steelers meant more to him, I guess...
