in LA there is a lot of places you can stay at, for example, Marriott in arcadia is roughly $150 a night, lots of beaches here, i suggest going to , la guna niguel. You can shoot me an email , what places you like to go.

Deadly. Sounds like a great spot.
Anyone coming to Ireland can hit me for advice any time.
Looks like I'll book into a place for the day I land and the days before I leave and I'll leave the rest to chance and see where I end up.
(or get told where to go by Wifey).
I'm just dreading the thoughts of renting a small car. Wifey would not understand the need for renting a 550i for 2 weeks and to be honest I reckon she's probably right.

IF you shop around on expedia and direct sites like budget.com for cars you can get a pretty nifty deal. A friend of mine rented a new corvette t-top from budget.com for $75/day!
Just shop around.

You can't go wrong with Santa Barbara. One of the nicest towns along the coast and one of our favorites. If you're looking for a B&B, I'd recommend the Bath Street Inn. It's walking distance to all the fun, but tucked away.

Santa Barbara is nice... for lunch. Way to LA for my tastes and that is not a good thing.
Without to much offense to some who have already posted, after you have spent some time in the southland, head up to San Luis Obispo County. Hotels are less expensive, the wine is better, the seafood fresher and Morro Bay is the gateway to the coast Highway and Big Sur (yes, you have to drive by Hearst's ego castle but really you have much better over there). From there its Carmel and Pacific Grove, Cannery Row, Monterey and then some of the secret roads you can PM me for for your run across the valleys to the great Valley Of the Yosemite! WONDERFUL!
Really you need to spend most of a day and night in Yosemite to do it justice but you could cross the Tioga pass on 120 a great experience in it's own right, and then up the 395 to Tahoe for the night and then bomb down to San Francisco to fly out exhausted. Or you could recross the valley (ugh) and spend more time in San Francisco. Five days is short but doable.
Happy to assist with roads, maps, hotels, places to eat in SLO Co. and surroundings.

I own a house in Santa Barbara (sorry, it's leased out or I'd let you use it) but still spend a lot of time there. You might want to consider staying in Carpinteria which is a tiny quiet beach town right next to Santa Barbara. There's a nice relatively inexpensive B+B there: Prufrocks
Also an underrated yet utterly good Thai restaurant that's really pleasant: Siam Elephant
Carpinteria is very laid back and quiet with a walkable main street and beach access. It's right next door to SB so you can get there quickly. And then from SB, you can hit the wine country of the Santa Ynez Valley: Wine Country
