I'm asking for a friend. He is in the market to buy a 135i. We have found one we want but it shows up as a buyback car. The reason for this is it was bought in Cali and the hpfp was replaced twice, because of this Cali bought it back, and the car is now in Texas. Is this a car that he should stay away from? Its a pretty good price with very low miles.
I realize I may be the lucky one, but I bought a 530xiT almost 5 years ago that was a loaded factory buyback. It had "software problems" and was repurchased by BMW. They reinstalled the software. I had no problems that were unusual and everything was fixed under warranty. The car has been great and has over 50K miles on it. My kids share it.
On the other hand, a 135 is more likely to be driven hard, but that's what they're made for, in addition to the HPFP problem. BMW has extended the HPFP warranty for 100K miles.
I wouldn't buy the car without driving it first. But my experience was very good.

BMW bought back our X5 in May, and it was due to a CCC problem they could not fix. With that being said, there were MANY other issues that also contributed to the buyback, that were never fixed, but also were NEVER listed as reasons why the car was bought back!
So even though the main issue is the HPFP, it does not necessarily mean that it was the ONLY issue, if it were me, I would NOT even consider it!
Those are my two cents, spend them as you see fit!

With so many cars out there without a story, I'd be inclined to stay away from anything with one.
My 550i ended up being a buyback. BMW may have fixed the issues, but this was a car that spent over 35 days of its first six months at the dealer. This, of course, isn't typical but there are so many more cars out there that didn't have the same unfortunate start to life that mine did that I'd always look at those first. It's just like buying a house - if there's a story, it's rarely one that increases the value relative to its peers...
