I've been getting into photography alot more recently. I've done it in the past just with my base xti body and lens. But a buddy at work is a unbelievable photographer, and has some crazy equipment. I've been wanting to take the next level by getting a new lens, so he convinced me to get a 50mm 1.8 lens. I got it today and absolutley love it, my pictures are turning out much better now. I'll probably get a 3rd lens in a few weeks depending on what I wanna go with, probably a good zoom or macro. Any other photographers on the forum? Either hobbist or professional? What gear are you guys rocking?

I've been thinking about it as it looks fun showing your own art. I like taking pics of my car but sometimes could not get that perfect post or perfect angle. What's a good camera for starters? I don't want to spend more than $800 for a camera really.

I bought the canon rebel XTI about 2 months before they released the XSI. I would get the XSI, it can be had for $630 on amazon with the kit lens. I've been very happy with my camera, it uses the same image sensor as the more expensive ones too.

The photographer makes the photo. The equipment helps record it.
What every you buy, invest in the lens before investing in the body. You'll find that if you have a good set of lens they will stay with you while the camera body will be replaced more often. Unless weight is an issue (travel photography) get the fastest lens you can. 50mm f/1.8 is good but generally a 50mm f/1.4 is often better. Good photo shops will also rent equipment. This is a great way to see if the lens (or camera) will help you do what you want. A 300mm f/2.8 lens may seem great on paper (not your wallet) but if you're climbing on rocks to get shots of kayaks running some rapids on a sunny day you may be wishing for the 300mm f/4 lens.

I have been ignoring my gear for about a year and a half now. No inspiration, lack of time and so on. However, I am trying to get back into it again!
My gear:
Canon EOS 1D Mk II N - body
EF 28-70 f/2.8 L IS - walk around lens
EF 17-40 f/4 L IS
EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS
EF 50 f/1.8 II
I also have an extender EF 1.4X II which is handy with the 70-200.
A local shop has the glass of my dreams up for sale right now: a used EF 200 f/1.8 L
But at 4000?, I can only dream about that bad boy!
