Sorry for going off topic but I need some PC advice. How do you get rid of this Spyware intrusion thing? It keeps clearing my homepage from IE and refuses to let me set it back. I've seen some of you have experience the same problem, hoping to get some advice.

Again sorry for going off topic. Many thx !

I think Spybot does a good job in not only removing spyware but blocking it from being installed again.

Download Spybot here.

Or, you may find that AdAware does a good job to.

Download AdAware here.

A combination of Spycop and AdAware have done a good job for me. This is not completely off-topic as these utilities will allow you to more safely enjoy finding and sharing information about your E60. You'll be more motivated to post useful info if you don't have to worry going online.

I would have to agree with the previous posters... A combination of AdAware, and Spybot Search & Destroy... (both availiable free at download.com) achieves the best results. It is almost necessary, however, to run these weekly.

I run a PC repair shop... and so far the record for AdAware violations is 1600+ with averages in the 200 range.

Also... make sure you go through your Add/Remove programs in the Control Pannel, and get rid of anything with "search" in the title... (or anything you didn't install yourself for that matter).

Also, if you are crawling the web for info and don't trust any of the sites you are visiting I highly suggest setting IE's security level to "High"

Tools, Internet Options, Security, Security Level Slide to High.

You can set it back when you believe you are using trusted sites.

A good think to also do is to check: Start, Programs, Startup for any "odd" programs... Plus also with REGEDIT check for any odd programs (NOTE: I take no responsibility for you trashing your system via REGEDIT. Backing up the below regkey is the best thing to do as there are many legit apps that need to run especially on notebook PC's):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run

yes, I agree. All those ways are great. If you want ultimate clean up you could always reformat! Just kidding. Ad-aware and spybot will do the trick.

I agree that periodic maintenance is always a good idea but on the newer versions of Spybot, you can set it to "immunize" your machine after cleaning it up.

I've found that now, if I run Spybot regularly (like weekly), it doesn't find any spyware at all. It's still a good idea to run it occasionally in conjunction with another program like AdAware. Usually each one finds something after the other one said everything's clean.

The key, like virus software, is to be sure to download the latest updates to the software to catch all the latest spyware, etc.

If you are really unlucky some of the latest Hijack software is immune to the latest Adaware and spyware checkers. I managed to get one of these critters on my home PC and it took a few days of serious effort to get rid of it. Found some good tips at :

If it my PC hadn't been loaded with stuff it might have been quicker to reload everything!
