Whatever one's general philosophy, it's an important award that has significance that transcends the political divide.

It's a little unfortunate that in what should be a proud moment for the country, some folks can't seem to put political differences to one side.

Congratulations to Obama.

Even the liberal press don't get what he did to deserve this award. That says something.

Honestly, the right thing to do would be not to accept the award. He would gain a lot more respect from the left and right.
This is what the president said during the speech this morning.

"To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize".

I don't think it declined into a partisan political argument (yet). It's merely about whether Obama (no matter what party he's with) deserved the award. If I had a US vote I would have voted for him, but I'm not high on the koolaid so I can see that it's arguable whether he deserves it.

After reading that link someone posted a couple of messages back, I've changed my mind. I think he does.

Same old usual suspects from the left and right saying they have a neutral perspective and only want what's best for the country, yet espouse the same tired rhetoric that favors their party's perspective. Yes, I'm talking about you. Yes, this is part of the problem.

I agree.

Before I opened this thread, which I originally hesitated to do, I knew who would have responded, and I knew what they would say.

That said, regardless of your point of view, the prize was awarded "for what obama will do". This award is VERY dangerous for him to accept, as he is likely to violate the intended purpose of the award.

Alfred Nobel's will stated: ?to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.?

Obama will likely give mccrystal at least some of the troops he requested. Alfred Nobel is turning over in his grave, and what he nobel peace prize has stood for for over 114 years is suddenly on thin ice. Le Duc Tho turned down the prize in 1973 citing "the situation in Vietnam as his reason". I dont see how this prize for Obama is any different.

there is also a 1.5 million cash reward tied to the prize, FYI.

This isnt about partisan issues or whether you love or hate obama. It is about the facts.

Ghandi was nominated 5 times and didnt recieve it. Should Obama really be awarded this coveted prize?

Thoughts?

"Obama will donate the entire amount to charity, a spokesman said." I wonder if we could start a campaign to donate the money to this worthy forum.
