HOPING that this is just a tempest in a teapot. This area of the Yellow Sea has been a hot spot for both the north and south for many years. South Korea was conducting scheduled military exercises in the area (and happened to be just 6 miles from the PRK border). Apparently someone in the PRK took exception to that. Question is, why launch an assault on an island inhabited mostly by fishermen?

I read an article that said there are 1000 ROK (Republic of Korea) Marines stationed there. Probably the easiest target to hit. Good thing the NORK's didn't have a forward observer directing fire a lot more people would have been killed.

A war there would be no joke. Some of the American public were crying because of the military personel we have lost during the War on Terror. That would pale in comparison if there was a second Korean War.

the island is not just fishermen. there is a large military base there and it was a direct hit on the base.
  • Lies 3km (2 miles) from disputed Yellow Sea border and 12km from North Korean coast
  • Houses military installations, a permanent marine detachment and a small civilian population
  • Rich fishing grounds in surrounding waters
