I'm on a plane every week for work and have been using the Bose set for years. Get them. They're great.

I do take care of them, I bought them about 3 years ago. The foam on one of the pads came out, they still work.

I too am on planes a lot and I used to have the Bose QC2s until they fell apart due to their plastic construction where the headband meets the ear pieces. I replace them several years ago with the Sennheiser PXC450s. All the sound of the Bose headphones and much more solid construction -- using metal at key points of stress where Bose uses plastic.

If you want amazing sound and great airplane portability, get the Shure SE530s -- the top non custom made eearbugs on the market. They retail for $500 but can be found on Ebay for about $250. They passivley block out the sound well while delivering inccreidble sound quality unmatched by lesser earbuds. Each ear bud has 3 different speakers. I picked up a pair a few months ago and love them.

Putting the usual digs about Bose to one side, their noise canceling phones actually do work very well. Phil, if your phones are otherwise OK, Bose will sell you replacement pads for a pretty reasonable sum. I have the QC3 phones, the new QC15 are also very good. I used to have a pair of QC2 too. Like Scott, I also carry a pair of $500 earbuds but for plane trips those Bose phones are hard to beat.

In terms of sound quality and noise reduction, my Bose QC2 were outstanding. My sole complaint about them was their durability. Lately, I've been carrying so many documents with me in my laptop case on the plane that I have been brining the earbuds instead of the Sennheiser because the Shure SE530s have incredible sound and take up no room
