Wow, I just bought a Nikon D80 (10 MP) a week ago as a birthday gift for my wife. We love that camera
Probably won't buy another one for at least a couple of years.

I bought the Nikon D100 as soon as I could get one late 2002. I bought the D200 as soon as I could get one early 2006. It's only been 18 months, and 8500 pictures later I'm still quite happy with the D200. I'd love a D300 but I can wait. I'm more interested in the new 28-70 f2.8. Its a relatively small full frame pro lens that's ideal for portraiture with a DX camera.
My opinion, although I think Canon makes good cameras, is their 40D does eclipse the D200 in some ways but the D300 is at another level in its price range.

Are the D-hundred series full-frame sensors? I'm not well versed with Nikon. I'm assuming the D300 is more of a competitor for the Canon 5D.

I've had my D70 since early 2004, so the D300 is arriving just in time. I can't go to the D3 since I now have the only two lenses I find I really need...in the DX size: the 12-24DX and the 18-200DX. It certainly has reduced the amount of stuff I carry around by having just two lenses.

We bought one too and it's great! I use it exclusively these days to take pics of my baby girl... she's almost 8 months old and I've shot about 2000 pics of her so far!
Great camera! Works good with Mac's Aperture as well....
