i have hiked a bunch of mountians in NY, some werent that high... in the catskills i hiked slide, whittenburg-cornell, and some other one. i cheated and drove up mt washington in the adirondaks.
i have been skiing at a few different places, vernon valley in NJ which was the worst. i dont think that mountian was 1600 feet high

But my fav place to ski in the northeast is Vermont. My dad (may he rest in peace) rented a share in a ski house in Killington, VT for about 10 years when I was a child/teenager. We went skiing there every other weekend (maybe that explains why long road trips are no big deal to me as I have great memories from our 5 hour rides to and from Killington in our 1976 BMW 2002). I miss those times so much.

Vernon Valley (now Mountain Creek) is a joke for serious skiiers. The biggest (and best IMHO) ski mountain within 3 hours drive of NY is Hunter.
