Was this a one-time thing or is this a result of a software upgrade? As you know, the HUD can display colors (amber, red, and green for sure) but I've not seen the green screen you illustrated with your photo...
Rudy, I've already expressed my doubts that iDrive in 5er Reihe contains any single line of code written by Microsoft, in another thread. We can start this discussion again or maybe someone has some reliable information and can clear the confusion.
Anyway, the original HUD color is orange, right? If so, Orange is expressed by something like RGB(255, 100, 0) where the first is Red, second is Greeen.
I would be worried in your place, that there is some hardware at fault there... If Red signal is gone, then all it would remain would be RGB(0, 100, 0) that is plain green, very comparable with what I can see on your HUD.
Conclusion: IMHO this looks like a connector fault somewhere, especially if you say it happened only briefly and once.
If this happens again, I'd have it thoroughly checked, especially the HUD display connector.
Even if it's all Java, it could still be running on some adaptation of a Windows-CE type platform from Microsoft, and would still make use of functions the operating system provides. The reference to Java appeared in one place, so that reviewer could have been mistaken, too -- we simply have no confirmation of what I-drive is really written in or running on (two distinct aspects).
