Wow, neat I was btw D80 and 30D, but now will wait when this or another will come back,
as D80 might make better pix w more noise than 30D and the 30D is better w ISO settings...

Initially, it was thought that CMOS was going to be noisier, and I think it was initially. Canon started CMOS production 03? Maybe earlier - and even at that time they had less noise than Nikon's offerings. By a wide margin. The entire Canon line has been CMOS for quite some time now.
I'm a Nikon DSLR shooter myself, but the tests don't lie. LBCAST is a CMOS variant - only the D2H and D2Hs have it. The D2X is a Sony-sourced CMOS sensor. All the other Nikon DSLRs are CCDs sourced from Sony. D100 = CCD. D50/70(s)/80/200 = CCD.
Canon has done a lot to make this technology really work. They have done a ton to maximize the fill rate of their photosites, which helps the noise issue - that and the Digic II processing is pretty stellar. Phil Askey of Dpreview.com does pretty detailed tests these days on all the cameras he reviews... there is a pretty appreciable drop in dynamic range with the Nikons at high ISO due to noise. The same does not occur with the Canons.

Canon has done a lot to make this technology really work. Phil Askey of Dpreview.com does pretty detailed tests these days on all the cameras he reviews... there is a pretty appreciable drop in dynamic range with the Nikons at high ISO due to noise. The same does not occur with the Canons.
