That's so UN-innovative.
Let's put a turbo jet engine on a P-51 and call it the new F-51.

The reason Boeing has modified this fighter is to make it an attractive option for foreign customers. Lockheed planned on selling our allies a ton of f-35's and the f-15 and the f-18 were to be slowly replaced over time.
Denmark was supposed to be a huge supporter of the f-35, however just cancelled their orders based on the current financial circumstances of the world economy. Others followed suit and decided they can still have superior air power sticking with the much more cost effective jets.
This is great news for Boeing, who competed with Lockheed in producing the new "state of the art" attack/fighter, and lost the bid.
Which is fantastic news for my company, considering we supply all the mechanical cockpit instrumentation for the entire f-18/f-15 fleet...

What happened to the F22? Did it not catch on or something? And the F18's are already being replaced?

Ban on exports
The opportunity for export is currently non-existent because the export sale of the F-22 is barred by American federal law.[25] Most current customers for U.S. fighters are either acquiring earlier designs like the F-15 or F-16, or else are waiting to acquire the F-35, which contains technology from the F-22 but is designed to be cheaper, more flexible, and available for export from the start.

The f-18 is still going to be used for years to come... Although a great fighter, the f-18's main role has been changed. The f-18 is now utilized as more of a bad weather/night time attack plane. These missions were once carried out by the A-6 Intruder (2 passenger, side by side cockpit)... We sell 18's to a slew of countries around the world... Mainly Israel, Australia, Turkey and Singapore. Our actual domestic numbers have decreased in productivity over the past three years. Where we were manufacturing around 200 "ship-sets" per year domestically, we are now producing about 80... These are new units going into new jets. Our foreign numbers have actually increased about double in the last three years.
The 18's will still be used well into the future, but we expect less and less new planes to be built over the next ten years until the program is phased out completely. The f-18 has very limited stealth ability... External weapon systems make the 18 fairly easy to pick up on radar. However!!! It is by far!!! One of the coolest, most sophisticated planes you can imagine.
