The lack of a Core 2 Mobile option is the thing I would be the most upset about.
I'm sorry to hear about quality going down hill. I've been very happy with my iMac, and my daughter has drives her iBook like she stole it. They've been not quite bullet prooof, as I had to replace the optical drive on the iMac, but it's so easy with Apple. And my daughter is getting a free battery since she had a Sony, which was near the end of its life anyway.

I'll be devil's advocate then.
Comparing the new Apples to the older Powerbooks is a little misleading.

I don't yet have a MacBook Pro but there are a lot of people that I work with who do. Everyone seems happy with theirs. Even people who have upgraded from the G4's. The Core 2 Duo will be out 'soon' and in my opion that one will be a 'rev b' equiv. So if I was in the market that's what I would pick up.
And yeah... I know I wasn't second.... I'm slow.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I think I'll wait for the Core 2 Mobile chips to arrive. I'll use my work laptop in the meanwhile.

Jiio,
I used to work for Apple. It is a very good machine.
I would suggest getting the best discount by a few routes. If you have any education routes/connections, your self, kids, etc. That by far is the best discount. You can even go online to the Apple.com site to find the discount. You also can get a good discount on the software.
An even more devious way would be to check out your local college campus. They most likely will have the educational discount and may not check for a student id.
Another way is through your company. Most every major corporation has a great discount rate.
Another route is to take the lowest competitive price and bring it to your local Apple retail store. They will match it right away. The retail group is extremely competitive to get it. They would match or beat anything from CDW or PCConnection.
Hope this helps!

Comparing the new Apples to the older Powerbooks is a little misleading. Several news articles from Mac fansites are strongly questioning what is going on with quality control at Apple. There are several issues with the Macbooks and Macbook Pros that may or may not be ironed out. They aren't the tanks that they used to be.
The lack of a Core 2 Mobile option is the thing I would be the most upset about. If you are dead set on getting an Apple, I'd wait for them to release the ones using those chips. The rest of the notebook makers are announcing now since the official release of Core 2 Duo Mobile was 8/26. I would also wait a few weeks or a month before ordering - just to see what the gripes and snags will be for the Apple product - pretty much every new release has had at least one thing that was corrected or acknowledged within that time period after shipments began.

I agree that the first rev of any machine is not the best purchase.

I disagree on the quality controls. The issue in the past few years has been the quality of the parts supplied by vendors to Apple. These vendors are not small companies either that are fly-by-nite shops. Of recent Sony supplied the defective batteries to Apple and Dell. Before that there were issue with capacitors that went bad both purchased by Dell and Apple.
I agree that the first rev of any machine is not the best purchase.

I wasn't referring to batteries or capacitors althought the former is mentioned briefly here with the rest of the issues...
