wow. dave i hope they are sheltered from it, but i doubt it. kids talk. specially the bigger one. shell hear it more i think. i think the good thing is that your a good parent and you just may have to explain something to her.

my son is 12 as well and asks a ton of questions. i have a brother in law who is a drug addict and i can no longer hide it from him, he knows and he sees. my point is she'll know, she'll hear, so as her parent its kinda your job to explain in whatever way you can cause you know her best, what happened. i find it hard these days as a parent to figure out what is even right and wrong. i want to shelter him and protect him from so much (specially the females in his school im'ing him on the comp at 10pm) but yet i dont know if thats a good thing. the real world is harsh and cruel. and i dont want my boys to be hit in the face with a brick when they get a dose of reality... sigh........

sorry this has happened so close to home for your family. let me know what happened, if she heard or if the school told them. they may even offer therapy for the kids that were close to those children so im sure it will be spoke about delicately.

I remember from an episode of "Law and Order" that this a type of disorder known as the "family annihilator".

Awful!! I saw this on the Fox website but they quoted a police spokeman saying three homicides. There really seems to be a rash of these lately...

Well I had the unenviable task of explaining to my daughters this morning that they will not be seeing their friends from school any more, and even worse had to explain exactly why this is the case! At both schools my kids attend, there were "Crisis Counselors" available and my neighborhood is in a state of shock right now. Thousand Oaks, for those who are unaware is routinely among the "Safest" communities in the USA, and this just goes to show that this can happen ANYWHERE! Right now less than a mile from my home, there is a media circus surrounding this unbelievable tragedy, and it just adds to the surreal nature of this day.

Damn, what school? I grew up in the Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks.
My daughters go to Lang Ranch Elementary and Los Cerritos Middle School, and were greeted by crisis counselors today! Not the way a child's day should EVER start!

It's sad that parenting skills must include explaining this facet of society and human nature. Especially, as adults, we don't fully understand it ourselves.
Honesty, reassurance, and compassion will help your kids through this. The right words will come as you try and help
them understand.
As a father of two teens I feel for you. Good luck!

hey puck, sorry to hear of such tragedy at your community. hopefully that media circus can disperse as quickly as it was formed.

regarding the counselors, are they offering it to the parents as well? If they are, i'd consider taking advantage of the counseling just so i would know what and how to tell my kids why their friends are no longer with us. I'm sure you'll do a great job with your kids. Just my opinion because honestly I wouldn't know where to begin in explaining to my kids why such a tragic and senseless act happened. How could I? Things like this just don't happen regulary (thank goodness), but when they do, it affects the community and is very traumatic to say the least. Wishing you and your family the best during this tragic time.

Dave as a recent new parent I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like dealing with something like this so close to home.

Our thoughts are with you and your family.
