Actually, Sony offered me a pretty sweet deal: For $100 I will turn in my dead console and they will ship me a refurbished 160Gb Slim (mine was an original 60Gb version). Cost includes shipping both ways. 
The only downside is the new systems no longer support PS2 games but I never used that feature.
