BUON NATALE E FELICE ANNO NUOVO.

BTW, yesterday I listened a radio transmission about the crazy Xmas race to gifts all over the western world and the ever increasing popularity of "Babbo Natale" (Xmas Father or Santa Claus) in Italy and the latin world, where the figure of Santa Claus was totally alien until about thirty-forty years ago.

Well, it seems that the modern figure of Santa Claus has been invented by notheless than Coca Cola company around 1910, when, after a trial in the USA, they where compelled by the law to not advertise the Coca Cola drink to children and of not depicting any kid below 12 in any advertisement. To overcome what Coca Cola people felt like a big limitation to the expansion of their business, they hired one of most reputed graphic of the time and asked him to develope an advertisement campaign able to attract the attention of kids without being directly aimed at them or depicting them. The answer was the modern Santa Claus figure that we all know; it was so succesful that in the following decades it totally replaced all other figures of local traditions all over the western world and, recently, of the eastern world too.

Wow...never knew that. Very interesting. No wonder Coke usually brings back the can with Santa on them every Christmas.
