I was similarly cleaned out when a travel agent accidentally charged me twice for a holiday a few years ago.
My bank initially told me it was my problem, but after a few choice words they decided otherwise and sorted it. I was completely broke for 2 days though.

That's why I avoid paying by debit card. Credit card is not bad because it's not linked to your checking account so the checks you wrote won't bounce.
